Jordan folded the flaps of the small, rectangular cardboard box. On the bathroom sink, an orange pill had been pulverized into granular powder.

Jordan listened again as the voicemail from his father echoed from the bathroom into the bedroom. Tom spoke slowly, reminding Jordan to be careful over the next few days. He also issued profuse apologies regarding what happened to Cullen.

Jordan pressed a button, cut off the message and turned off the phone.

Hopping awkwardly across the bathroom floor, Jordan dragged his toes against the cool tile underneath. After being escorted back to Cougar Village by his father, Jordan had thrown his crutches into the garbage dumpster outside the residence halls. Jordan, tired and furious over what happened tonight to his best friend and teammate, needed to get healthy again.

He looked at a wrinkled white cloth, peppered with blood spots, next to the orange powder. Brushing the cloth aside, Jordan collected the powder into one hand. He allowed the gristly powder flakes to roll from the fingers into his mouth. The taste and texture of the powder nearly made him gag.

He swallowed and looked intently into the mirror.
